The Portland Business Journal reports that the food manufacturing industry is showing stable growth during lean economic times. Oregon food manufacturing companies added more than 1,000 jobs in 2008 – the only manufacturing sector to add jobs last year. The article notes that much of the success stems from efforts, including those led by the NWFPA, to encourage clusters in the Northwest. NWFPA member YoCream’s significant growth is highlighted. The Portland-based company added 20 employees in the past year, and plans to hire 12 more early this year. Brian Todd, president of The Food Institute, explains that consumers are “shifting their dollars to supermarkets and other food stores away from restaurants.”
